Annual Tour de Sprawl
Thursday, October 9th - BikeAthens
Benefit at the 40 Watt Club.
The show opens at 9:30 with The Squalls
(acoustic) followed at 10:30 by Herb and
Skills - live. The final performer is Robyn
Hitchcock at 11:30.
40 Watt doors open at 8:30. The cover charge is $7 and is tax
deductible.
Friday October 10th - Tour de Sprawl
Keynote Presentation by Chuck Bohl
at the UGA
Chapel
Chuck
Bohl is a professor of Architecture at the University
of Miami and the head of the Knight Program in Community Building.
Dr. Bohl's presentation is titled "Town
Centers for Post-Suburban America." This FREE presentation
will be held at the UGA
Chapel on north campus. Doors open at 8:00 PM. A free reception
with refreshments immediately follows in the Founders Memorial
Garden..
Saturday October 11th - Tour
de Sprawl
8:00 AM - Day of Event Registration
on College Square in Downtown Athens.
All participants (bike and bus) must check in at the registration
table. Pre-ordered T-shirts will be availbe for pick-up. Walk-in
registration is available for the bike ride, but if you plan
to ride the bus, early registration is advised. (click

9:00 AM - Tour Kickoff presentation
by Chuck Bohl. The Tour starts immediately afterwards.
Stop #1 - Top floor of the
Classic Center Parking Deck to view the site of the future
Multimodal Transportation Center Site. Butch McDuffie,
Director of Athens Transit Services for Athens Transit Authority,
speaks on: The Future of Transportation in Athens. Barbara
Bacon, Housing Program Coordinator for the East Athens Development
Corporation, speaks on the Need for Better Transportation Services
for Lower Income Citizens
Stop #2 - Canopy
Studio at Chase Park Warehouse Complex. The speakers will
be Bob and Jennifer Segrest, architects and partners in
Bloomer Segrest Architecture, they will speak about Adaptive Reuse
of Buildings. Then there will be an abridged presentation of Big
Box Blues with a performance on trapeze and by local singer
Julie Powell. There will also be a tour of Canopy Studios
with trapeze demonstrations and refreshments. Athica studio, next
door, will also be open for the Tour de Sprawl.
Stop #3 - Colonial
Beechwood Shopping Center - Jack
Crowley, Dean of the College of Environment and Design
will be speaking on the topic of redevelopment and infill. Refreshments
will be served.
Stop #4 - Ben
Burton Park - Dr. Liz Kramer, Public Service Assistant
at the UGA Institute of Ecology, will talk about the Effects of
Sprawl on Wildlife. Melanie Ruhlman of the Upper Oconee Watershed
Network (UOWN) will speak and dedicate one of their conservation
projects at the Park. Refreshments will be served.
Stop #5 -
Old Athens City Jail - ACC Mayor Heidi Davison,
will speak about Community Building. Robert Ransay is a
Financial Advisor at Raymond James Financial Services. He will
be speaking on the subject of the Importance of Historic Preservation
and the Need for a Downtown Histori c Preservation Designation.
There will be refreshments and entertainment provided. Winners
of the R.E.M. Ticket and Commuter Bike Raffle
will be announced.
