Keynote Address
The Coming Green Urbanism - Creating
sustainable human settlement patterns with hope for the future.
Is the recent partnership between The Congress for the New Urbanism
and the US Green Building Council is a strong enough indicator
of a new shared vision for human life on Planet Earth? Are US
Cities implementing new ecologically balanced urban concepts
to avoid the perils of open land killing sprawl. Glenwood Park
in Atlanta is trying to develop a new model for how to that
and make an economic case for a new standard of living that
can survive within the limits of nature.

Speakers
Walter
Brown is Vice President of Green Street Properties and
among many duties serves as Green Street's environmental affairs
coordinator and coordinates the neighborhood task force that assists
Green Street it its re-zoning effort for the Glenwood Park project.
Walter came to Green Street from the Southface Energy Institute,
where he spent three years as the Senior Program Manager. At Southface,
Walter founded the Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable, a monthly discussion
group active to this day, directed the Greenprints Sustainable
Development, and helped found the Atlanta Regional Chapter of
the US Green Building Council.
An Atlanta native, Walter earned a BS in Community Development
from Georgia State. Walter serves on the Board of Directors of
the Freedom Park Conservancy, the Board of Directors of the Community
Housing Resource Center, the steering committee for the Sustainable
Atlanta Roundtable, and recently served as the founding Secretary
of the Atlanta Regional Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.
Dennis Creech is executive
director and a founder of the Southface Energy Institute, a private
nonprofit organization offering education, research and technical
assistance programs in energy, sustainable technologies, and applied
building sciences. He has served as Executive Director for over
20 years.
Mr. Creech has served on the board of directors of the Greater
Atlanta Home Builders Association, the Energy and Environmental
Building Association (EEBA), and several environmental organizations.
He was named Georgia Environmental Leader of the Year in 1999
and serves on the Environmental and Community Task Force for the
Georgia Regional Transportation Authority.
In 1996, Mr. Creech directed a project to design and construct
the Southface Energy and Environmental Resource Center, a state-of-the-art
demonstration facility featuring over 100 energy and resource
efficient technologies. He served as the green building advisor
for the formation of the EarthCraft House program.
Bruce
K. Ferguson, Professor and Director UGA School of Environmental
Design, teaches environmental analysis, sustainable design and
landscape construction. He has participated in conservation of
irrigation water on the lawn of the White House, and restoration
of urban watersheds in California, Florida, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
He is currently on the editorial advisory board of Landscape Architectural
Graphic Standards and Storm water. He is a Fellow of ASLA and
a recipient of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture's
Outstanding Educator Award. BA Dartmouth, MLA Pennsylvania.
Richard Field currently serves as the Environmental Coordinator
for Athens-Clarke County. In addition to assuring the efficiency
and effectiveness of interdepartmental programs which affect the
environment, he directs the county's green building initiative.
He was formerly a senior public service associate and learning
specialist at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Dick's
formal training is in forestry and has experience in community
and natural resources planning. He is a registered forester and
a LEED-accredited professional.
Chuck
Galis, Principal Partner Galis/Kimbrough commercial and
investment real estate company has focused on developing investment-grade
income properties exclusively in the Athens market. With a philosophy
of creating lasting value for investors and the community, Chuck
lists among his achievements Ansonborough, The Historic Georgian,
WestPark Club Apartments, The Village at Cedar Shoals, The Bank
of America Building, Oakbrook Corporate Campus, WestPark Center
among others. Chuck holds a BBA degree with a major in real estate
from the University of Georgia
Josh Koons is a partner of Robinson Fisher Koons, Inc.
an ecological planning and design firm that helps clients create
successful projects within the context of land, community life,
and heritage. Guiding principles are derived from ecology, which
is holistic by definition and interdisciplinary by practice.
Randy Smith is the Facility Supervisor for Sandy Creek
Nature Center. Responsible for the operation of the 250 acre,
multi-building regional nature center. His duties include program
coordination and implementation, facility support and maintenance,
exhibit design, budgeting, fundraising, grant writing, coordination
of support efforts with a non-profit board, and long range planning
for the institution. The Nature Center serves a regional audience
of more than 150,000 and involves over 50,000 patrons in programs
or in center recreational activities.
Jason Peek is the Streets and
Drainage Engineer, Athens-Clarke Co. Transportation and Public
Works Department

Alfred Vick, Assistant Professor UGA School of Environmental
Design, is a licensed landscape architect whose main interest
is preserving and enhancing the functioning of natural systems
while effectively and attractively integrating human use. He specializes
in storm water management, stream restoration, native planting
design, sustainable landscape design/construction and landscape
ecology. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Southeast
Exotic Pest Plant Council, presented numerous lectures on water
conservation, storm water management, and invasive exotic plants,
and co-authored "Greenspace: Evaluating, Restoring, and Managing
Natural Areas in the Atlanta Vicinity". BS Illinois, MLA
Georgia.
