From July 11 Athens Transit Public Information Meetings

12 July, 2006

At Tuesday's public information meetings, Interim Athens Transit Director Dan Jones announced the beginnings of long-awaited night service and the transition from the City Hall Transfer Center to the newly constructed Multi-Modal Transportation Center.

Night service will begin on August 14th on a limited number of ATS routes. Check www.athenstransit.com or call (706) 613-3430 for further details.

Mr. Jones indicated that, should the night routes prove popular with riders, ATS is "90-99%" certain that the evening routes will continue beyond this budget cycle as part of Athens Transit's regular service schedule.
In addition to the introduction of night service on August 14th, Athens Transit will also relocate its Transfer Center to the recently completed Multi-Modal Transportation Center, located off East Broad St., between the Greenway and the Classic Center Parking Deck. Starting August 14th, all ATS buses will gather at the MMTC, rather than City Hall. Mr. Jones predicts that most routes' schedules will not be altered more than 4-6 minutes. In addition to covered bus bays, climate controlled waiting rooms, and restrooms, the MMTC will offer four standard bike racks and twelve rent-able bicycle lockers. For more about the MMTC, please visit http://www.athenstransit.com/mmtc.html.

The MMTC will celebrate its grand opening on at noon on Thursday, August 10th. Please consider attending and show your support for this tangible step toward a more balanced transportation infrastructure in Athens. Also, be sure to contact both ATS staff and the ACC Mayor & Commission to thank them for pursuing expanded transit services in Athens!
