Plans for two major road improvement projects on Athens' west side were presented recently in public forums. Detailed plans can now be viewed online, and public comment accepted by project sponsors (ACC and GDOT).

MITCHELL BRIDGE ROAD INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS

Highlights: Improved safety for motorists turning into subdivisions at Auburn Parkway, Woodhaven Parkway, and High Ridge Drive. Road widths are sufficient for eventual inclusion of bike lanes; these areas will remain unmarked for the present time, but they anticipate a general road-widening in the future where bike lanes will be added along the length of Mitchell Bridge Road.

SR 10 LOOP and ATLANTA HIGHWAY INTERSECTION

Highlights: Proposed interchange improvement at the State Route 10 Loop and Atlanta Highway will include a new loop ramp from Atlanta Highway westbound to the SR 10 Loop southbound. The plan will also realign the existing loop ramp from Atlanta Highway to the SR 10 Loop northbound. The Atlanta Highway in this area will be widened to eight lanes of traffic (from present four lanes). Bike lanes and sidewalks are included. The intersection at Huntington Road and Atlanta Highway will be improved and the Jennings Mill Road intersection with Atlanta Highway will be relocated.

On the home page choose “Public Outreach” and select the project’s County and choose go. A list of DOT projects in that County will appear and you can select the one you’d like to view. Plans will also be available for viewing at the DOT Area Office located at 450 Old Hull Road.

Public comment accepted by GDOT through the month of December. Comments can be made via the GDOT website http://www.dot.state.ga.us following similar instructions above.
