ACC Launches Neighborhood Traffic Management Program

On Wednesday, May 31, ACC Transportation and Public Works presented
their proposal for a revived Neighborhood Traffic Management Program.

The slide show from the public meeting, along with a document outlining
the proposed changes to the NTMP policy/procedure statement can be

The meeting was well-attended, with residents and representatives from
numerous Athens neighborhoods. Topics discussed included former NTMP
projects and costs, results and feedback, successes and failures,
proposed changes to policies and procedures for a new program
(including criteria for qualification of streets to receive funding),
and a suggested timetable for implementation.

The revived NTMP would be funded out of the ACC Capital Budget, with
$75,000 slated for NTMP in FY 07.

A Q&A session was held, with a seeming general agreement among many in
attendance on one aspect of the proposal: that the neighborhoods
should not have to share expenses with ACC in implementing traffic
calming features. In contrast, there were a few inquiries for a
mechanism by which neighbors could pay to have traffic calming features
installed in cases where their streets did not qualify under new
criteria for the program.

BikeAthens participates in Partners for a Prosperous Athens
BikeAthens continues to represent its constituents and the community as
a member of the Housing and Transportation committee. The committee is
investigating how and in what direction public transit can be expanded
to assist the economically disadvantaged and physically challenged to
be re-integrated into the community. Meeting notes are available at:

Bicycle Recycling Program at Camp Summer Spree
During the first week of June, BRP delivered a bicycle repair workshop
to participants of Camp Summer Spree. During the five day workshop,
participants learned how to overhaul and repair a bicycle. Each
participant received a bicycle and helmet which they can keep. The
workshop concluded with a morning ride through Whitehall Forrest.

Camp Summer Spree brings community members together to make a positive
difference in children's lives. The camp is free to participants and
provides summer recreational and learning experiences to under-served
youth of Athens Clarke area who would not otherwise have the
opportunity to participate in a traditional camp atmosphere.

-----------
BRP on Summer Break
The Bicycle Recycling Program is on summer break until mid July. All
scheduled work sessions between now and then are cancelled. When the
program resumes, it will move work sessions to a work day evening.
