
Here is a summary of the major Georgia state statutes
governing bicycles:
- Traffic laws apply to people riding bicycles so obey all signs,
signals and pavement markings.
- Signal all turns and stops using the standard hand signals.
- Pedestrians (people on foot) have the right-of-way in crosswalks
and on sidewalks.
- Ride with traffic on the as far to the right as is "practicable"
except when turning left or avoiding road hazards. That is, as
far to the right as is safe.
- Do not weave in and out of traffic.
- No more than two bicyclists can ride side by side.
- Passengers must have their own attached bike seat.
- Each bicycle must have brakes strong enough to skid the braked
wheel on dry, level pavement.
- If you ride your bike at nighttime, you must have a headlight
emitting white light which is visible from at least 300 feet ahead,
and a red rear reflector which is visible from 300 feet to the
rear. (A light emitting red light can be used in addition to the
rear red reflector.)

ATHENS CYCLING LAWS
Athens-Clarke County also has a number of ordinances governing
bicycles. The most important of these is Chapter 3-10:
Sec. 3-10-1. Traffic ordinances apply to persons riding bicycles.
Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway shall be granted all
of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable
to the driver of a vehicle by this chapter except as to special
regulations in this Code and except as to those provisions of this
chapter which by their very nature can have no application. (Ord.
of 4-7-92, ë 4)
Sec. 3-10-2. Parking.
No person shall park a bicycle upon a street or highway other than
upon the roadway against the curb or upon the sidewalk in a rack
to support the bicycle or against a building or at the curb, in
such manner as to afford the least obstruction to pedestrians. (Ord.
of 4-7-92, ë 4)
Sec. 3-10-3. Riding on sidewalks. [NOTE THAT THIS ORDINANCE HAS
BEEN CHANGED AS OF 2/6/02; DETAILS WILL FOLLOW.]
(a) No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a district
zoned as business.
(b) It shall be unlawful for any person to ride a bicycle on any
sidewalk located within the area designated as the downtown tax
district.
(c) It shall be unlawful for any person to rollerskate or ride
a skateboard on the public streets or on any sidewalk located within
the area designated as the downtown tax district. (Ord. of 4-7-92,
