Bicycle Repair Workshop - Camp Summer Spree '06
In June of 2006, the Bicycle Recycling Program hosted a workshop at Camp Summer Spree. Five campers attended a week long class in which they learned how to repair a bicycle. Each camper was provided with a bicycle, set of tools and lecture notes. The bicycles were in various states of disrepair. The campers selected a bicycle, repaired it and took the bicycle home at the end of the class. They also received a helmet to keep.
Each class session started with a lecture on how to repair a component (i.e. fix a flat, replace cables, adjust brakes) followed by hands on exercise.
On the last day of class, we took the campers to the Whitehall Forest for a bicycle ride. The weather was beautiful, and the scenery magnificent. Mountain bike riding was a little more challenging than they expected but I think they had fun. We are looking forward to participating in Camp Summer Spree 2007.
