BIKE FACILITIES APPROVED FOR CONSTRUCTION IN FY 04
|
Following are the bike
projects unanimously approved for construction in Fiscal Year
2004 (FY 04)
at the March 2003 commission meeting. The Mayor and Commission
approved a list of bike lane/bike facility projects and also
agreed to re-instate Prince Avenue into the Bicycle Master
Plan, thus officially
recognizing it as a primary transportation corridor for commuting
cyclists. Briefly, the projects
approved for construction in the upcoming fiscal year are
as follows:
|
|
OGLETHORPE AVENUE
To have bike lanes striped in the roadway between Prince
Avenue and Sunset Drive, and between Hawthorne Avenue and
Mitchell Bridge Road, where car travel lanes are wide enough
to permit. There will be some minor reconstruction done at
Prince and Sunset intersections. Between Sunset Drive and
Hawthorne Avenue, travel lanes are too narrow to stripe in
bike lanes. There will be signs placed to mark a temporary
disruption of bike lanes and bike stencils painted in the
roadway to remind motorists of the bike route along this short
section.
WILLIAMS STREET
To have bike lanes striped in the roadway (which will receive
a fresh resurfacing) between Oconee Street and Baldwin Street
(where new bike lanes along East Campus have recently been
added by UGA). This project provides the last important link
of the North Oconee River Greenway to the UGA campus.
EAST CAMPUS ROAD
To add to the existing off-road bike path on the east/south
side of E Campus Road and connect the existing path (which
now ends at Rogers Road) all the way to Milledge Avenue.
ALPS ROAD
To connect the Baxter Street and Hawthorne Avenue bike areas
with an off-road bike path (east side) and a sidewalk (west
side)
|
|
PRINCE AVENUE, LUMPKIN STREET,
MILLEDGE AVENUE, KING AVENUE
To add signs and roadway stencils to remind motorists that it
is a primary commuting route for cyclists. Prince Avenue may
also get the benefit of some painted crosswalks at several intersections
between Milledge and Pulaski. |
|
BAXTER STREET
To increase the length of skip-stripes to three-feet between
Milledge Avenue and Alps Road (they are only one-foot at present).

OTHER ONGOING PROJECTS OF NOTE:
EAST CAMPUS
ROAD
UGA will be putting bike lanes down along the rest of East Campus
Road this summer. Between this UGA project, the new Greenway bridges,
and the East Campus and Williams Street projects described above,
there will be a complete bike route connecting Sandy Creek Nature
Center all the way through campus to Milledge Avenue.
COLLEGE STATION
ROAD
ACC will begin construction of continuation bike lanes on College
Station Road between Riverbend Road and Research Road this spring.
RAIL TRAIL TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR
Don't forget the Rail-Trail connecting Barnett Shoals Road bike
lanes with the new ACC multi-modal transporatation center on Broad
Street near downtown. The proposal for this project has been submitted
to Congressman Max Burns within the last month. That proposal includes
the reconstruction of the "Murmur" trestle across Trail
Creek at Dudley Park, as well as the construction of a new bike/pedestrian
bridge across the North Oconee River, and also interconnects with
the North Oconee River Greenway. This project will need your support!
CAMPUS BIKE RACKS
Bike racks are now going under covered areas at the Law
School, Psychology/Journalism (Instructional Plaza), Biosciences,
Forest Resources, and South Campus Deck. Other much needed
bike racks are being installed at the UGA Chapel and at Riverbend
Research Lab.
